Keeping Lady Gouldian Finches is not as easy as it sounds. They need a lot of care to be able to survive in captivity. If you dont know what you are doing and never had gouldians before get educated before getting intogouldians , otherwise just print out a picture of them and adopt a parrot! Take good care of your gouldians and they will sing back at you :)
Here are some of the main things that you need to know about gouldians
-Controlled temperature:
Gouldian finches in the wild used to live in the Northern Australia , close to the sea so temperature there is from 75-85 degrees. Keeping the temperature between there is the best thing you can do for your gouldian finches!
-Controlled humidity:
Depending on your climate you might have more or less humidity comparing to Australia!
Keeping humidity to normal levels at all times seem to work just fine with gouldians. To accelerate breeding you have to simulate the pre- raining season in Australia so let humidity drop below normal for a week or so and then run your humidifier at all times. Remember that the baby gouldians need normal humidity levels to hatch!
-Millet spray:
They just love it! Use it as a treat at all times. When they are feeding babies it is very important for them to accelerate their feeding times! Also it helps little babies to start eating on their own. They absolutely need it from the 6th to the 9th week of their lives.
-Seeds:
Feed them a mix of seeds, including: white millet, German millet, red millet, canary grass seed. According to my observations they do not need to be fed greens as long as you provide them supplements like breeders blend and feather fast from morning bird products. Those two products work really amazing!
-Calcium:
All birds need calcium, especially during breeding season. Cuttlebone should be available to your finches at all times. Also use calciboost ( liquid or powder) 2-3 times a week during breeding season
-Mites:
The #1 danger for your finches is air-sac mites! S76 is the solution. Provide it 2 days in a row for 3 weeks every 6 months and you never have to worry about mites again!
-Protozoal infections:
This is getting to be a real pain especially when you foster to societies! You will see your birds throwing up and pass out one after the other… If you are at this point its already too late to save them. Usually for the first 7 days of their lives use ronivet-s in the water and again when they are 7-8 weeks old. For adult birds use ronex from morning bird products for preventative treatment. The bigger advantage of ronex vs ronivet-s is that ronex can be safely used during breeding season . More information can be found here
-Be organized:
Keep records of your finches! Record keeping is important especially when you breed your finches. To download the free software that will help you keep your finches organized click here. If you have any questions about this software please email us : gouldian@myfinch.com |
